My daily commute is along the old Innocent Railway trail in Edinburgh. According to the Edinburgh Guide, the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway opened in July 1831 as a horse-drawn tramway built to haul agricultural produce and coal from the mines of Lothian up to the Edinburgh at St Leonards. Designed by engineer James Jardine (1776-1858), it was Edinburgh’s first railway line. It’s an absolutely stunning cycle (as you can see here with my buddy Dani).
I recently stumbled upon this film of the last train on the Innocent Railway. It’s amazing to think that this bit of area which has become so familiar to me was used in such a different way. Welcome to Edinburgh.
